Jimmy Was Back in Town

Jimmy Buffett has trouble staying incognito around here. It's no surprise. After all, the man flies in on a Cessna Caravan seaplane. You can't miss it. And if the pontoons weren't a dead give away, the initials JB sure are. Once that plane is parked in Saint Jean, the coconut telegraph goes wild and speculation begins as to where and when this seafaring pirate of a singer/songwriter might give one of his impromptu, free, concerts. That's right, free. For those in the know. I've seen him pull up a chair and sing a few at Le Select. I saw him play on the dock with his full band for the 50th anniversary of Le Select back in 1999. Rumor has it he played a few songs last week at Le Select. He has a special relationship with Marius, the patriarch of Le Select, and the burger joint in the garden is called Cheeseburger in Paradise, after Jimmy's eponymous song (yes, folks, the song came first). The icing on the cake was a three-hour concert last week at Bete A Z'Ailes, a waterfront bar in Gustavia. Someone had let the cat out of the bag about this one (shame on you if you are reading this) and hundreds of people were craning their necks to get a good view. But this man is undaunted by it all and sang his heart out. His songs. Beatles songs. Bob Marley songs. Cracking jokes about how much it would cost to see him in concert in Barbados. Not to mention anyplace else. I've often said that some of the best things in Saint Barth are free: the sun, the sand, the stars, Jimmy Buffett. What else can you ask for? Jimmy has had a very special relationship with this island for over 30 years, and we certainly want to keep it that way, so next time you see that seaplane cruising in, please keep it under your hat! I saw another kind of show the other night at La Plage, a hot spot on St. Jean beach. Yes, that's the one. The one that causes terrific traffic jams during high season. At night they now have a bbq smoking away, and an installation called Cine-Plage, where they show old movies on Friday nights. Casblanca on the beach? Sounds good to me. They also have a low-tech little show on the beach with fire-eating three guys who also twirl lights in luminescent costumes. Performers from afar? Actually, no, they are three local guys who have day jobs in hotels or supermarkets who are self-taught performers. Which just goes to show you that you never know what somebody around here is liable to do.
