For the first time in several decades, the Port of Gustavia was empty on December 31. Strong sea swells from the north-northeast caused by a low-pressure system in the Atlantic as a result of winter storms that battered the United States during the week of Christmas forced port director Ernest Brin to close the ports to all pleasure boats and commercial marine traffic from December 28-January 2. With the arrival of the high waves, some reaching 9 to 12 feet, some of the boats were obliged to use their motors to maintain their positions at the dock on the night of Sunday, December 27 to Monday, December 28. The next day a few of the boats knocked against the dock, damaging their rear decks, while others ripped out mooring rings, and others were forced to cut mooring ropes that had pulled too tight. All of the boats were asked to leave the docks as quickly as possible and to anchor in the outer harbor, an operation which was tricky as the port had been full for the past week. For the end of the year festivities, the direction of the port noted that the first motor yachts arrived in mid-December and the port was usually full between December 26 and December 31, while this year the main docks—Quais de la République and Général de Gaulle—were full by December 21. There were a total of 289 boats in the harbor for New Year’s Eve, with slightly over 100 of them longer than 65 feet. A regular visitor, Ultima III, the 118’ motor yacht that belongs to American businessman Ron Perelman, made an appearance in the harbor as of December 25, while Jimmy Buffet’s Continental Drifter III took its usual spot by The Wall House. New this year was the surprising shape of the 134’ motor, Ocean Emerald, whose strange fish-like shape clad in slate gray represents the first yacht designed by acclaimed British architect Norman Foster.
