I hope by friend Lu doesn’t mind, as this little musing is about her, while at the same time about life on an island. The truth of the matter is that on an island, someone is always arriving or leaving, but in the case of most of our friends, they will soon be back… and its always a good excuse for a party or a dinner out, it’s so-and-so’s last night, or they just got here, so let’s get the gang together, etc. But Lu has decided to leave definitively this month, to join her family in the United States, where her two sons, and daughters-in-law, and grandchildren await her. I first met Lu in 1992 when I had some duplicate wedding presents from Little Switzerland, which at the time was a leading spot for jewelry and gifts. I was told to go see the manager, Madame Chassin and she would help me out. And that, of course, was Lu... Over the years we would see each other at various social occasions and became friends. Eventually Lu moved into the rental studio in our house and we became “family” for a little while. We had some pretty hilarious moments (at least they are funny in retrospect)… the night a bird flew into the studio and spent the night hopping from rafter to rafter... where were Lu’s cats that night? The cats she would tell to look right and left before they went outside in the morning, in case our cats were waiting on the deck to pounce—which they usually were. How many times did Lu splash water on one of our cats to chase him away (that would be Biscuit), and how many hours did she spend trying to coax the other one down from the mezzanine in her studio (that would be Caramel). Lu’s leaving has not gone unnoticed: there have been a round of good-by parties including one for 80 people, and a smaller luncheon, among others. And Lu will be missed by more than just her personal friends… she has been active in the Anglican Church, the St. Barth Music Festival, and the Lions Club, giving lots of her time for good causes. That’s another part of living on an island, and even more so on a small one like St Barth where being part of the community helps enrich one’s life, especially for those of us who come from afar and make the island our adopted home. For Lu, Saint Barth was home for almost 25 years and she really made it her own,. She can leave, but we’ve already made her promise that she’ll come back to visit. After all, her arrival and her departure will be two more excuses to have another party!
