August in St. Barths
Ah....to be back in St. Barths,..... anytime of the year is wonderful, but August is indeed special. Miles of beaches to yourself, lovely dinners where the owners actually have time to chat and catch up on news with old friends, and a serene peacefulness so unique to this little island. My husband and I have been coming for 18 years and never cease to marvel how gracious this paradise is....regardless of the season. St. Barths is truly a year-round haven of peace, happiness and joy.....Thank you St. Barths for allowing us a wee bit of your heaven!

All I can say is that I left my heart on St. Barth's. There was not one thing that I did not fall in love with on this island (except the hairpin turns on the hills). What a beautiful island, distinct with its charm that can only be true to St. Barths. My husband and I cannot wait to return to see the people, the water, the villages, and
of course, eat the incredible food and drink the vanilla rum! We were there in May 2005 and even though the weather was unusual for the island, we truly feel that we left a piece of ourselves there and took a piece of the island back with us in our hearts!

I wanted to drop a line and tell you about our Glorious week on your Beautiful Island.
My Wife and I were there with her parents and a couple we traveled with 2 years ago to your Island.
We stayed at the Emeraude Plage on St. Jean in the "Villa", the very same spot as in 2003.
We were there from 24 January through 31 January 2005. They added a nice little walk up Snack Bar
(with liquid refreshments) right on the beside the Villa.
We ventured out the first night for a wonderful dinner at Nikki's Beach. Great Atmosphere and a fantastic menu.
We did most of our Breakfast and Lunch's at the Villa. We also had dinner at "Le Buccaneer", another fantastic experience.
We enjoyed lunch at The Wall, but the most memorable adventure was our last dinner at "Fellini" in the Manahani Hotel.
We got lucky and they were celebrating Brazilian culture that night. Along with our 4 course meal we got to enjoy
A magnificent display of Dancers performing in a multitude of colorful outfits. It was a truly enjoyable evening.
As with all great things, the vacation had to eventually end. We took off from the tiny Airport, waved sadly to the
People on the beach. We will be back in 2007 because we can't get enough. Dipping in to the cool waters on
St. Jean every morning before breakfast is a feeling I can't get out of my system. We also had a tour of your Island
By a very knowledgeable Cab Driver. Magnificent vacation that never lasts long enough.

I had read all these reviews before my husband and I went on our honeymoon and we were sure we'd love St. Barths, but we still had no idea how captivated we'd be by its sheer beauty and tranquility! We were so lucky to live a dream for 10 days. The peace of the island immediately set our stresses behind us as we were welcomed in great warmth by everyone we met. Everyday was a new adventure into paradise! Yes, the landing on the St. Jean runway stopped our hearts just briefly, but it was all part of the unique experience. We can't wait to return and celebrate our anniversaries at the island that will always have a very special place in our hearts!

I first visited SB in December 1999. Although it was my first trip, I have always had a warm spot in my heart for Saint Barts. You see, my grandmother's family came from SB to New York in the late 1800s after having been on the island for almost 150 years. We have many old letters from SB and pictures showing SB in its glory days as a sleepy island no one knew about.<br>
I have been back several times and look forward to perhaps migrating back to my ancestral homeland.

We have
been coming to St. Barths for more that 10 years now and at the end of each
trip we sit at the little airport hating to leave! When I recently
discovered your site I instantly made it a "favorite" to visit on those
rainy days here in Tennessee when I can see the beautiful weather of the
island....although I noticed you had some rainy days last week, too bad!
Our favorite view is from the hillside of St. Jean. We
have loved every restaurant that we've chosen and this past spring
discovered Eddy's....what a find! Well, back to reality in
Tennessee.....looking forward to our next visit, probably '06!

- - Tom and Marion, from Tennessee -- (October 2004)

My wife and I have been steady visitors to this wonderful place in paradise
since 1984 and this October 1st. will be our 35th. time. The friends we have
made over the years are very close and dear to us, especially our friends on
Flamands beach. We also include our wonderful friends from the world
famous Le Select .

I have visited St Barths every year for the past 9 years. I have not been able to find anywhere else I would rather be. My last trip was for a duration of 2 weeks and that wasnt even long enough. Beautiful, relaxing, friendly and warm. The occasional Celebrity sightings are always exciting. I look forward to my next vacation and cannot wait to endulge in the many fine restaurants once again.

- - T.A. -- (August 2004)

My wife and I
first visited St. Barth's in April of 2001 on her 40th birthday. I offered
to take her anywhere in the world and she choose St. Barth's. We had both
known of the island for years but really weren't sure what to expect. On
prior trips to the Caribbean we had visited Tortola, Jamaica, Antigua and
the Bahamas. None of these islands prepared us for what we were about to
experience. The beautiful beaches, the friendly people, the delicious food,
the fabulous climate...How relaxing to wake up every morning and have the
most important decision be where to eat dinner? Our afternoons often start
with lunch at Tom Beach and end after a few hours of sun on St. Jean Beach.
We have been back every year since and this year will be making a second
trip in August to show our daughters what paradise is like.

- - Kent, Liz, Sara, Anne and Laura -- (May 2004)

In November of 2003 I brought my wife and two children ( ages 6 and 4 )
to St. Barts for the first time ( I had been once before ). The people
of St. Barts were so kind to our children - it was a joy! We had three
wonderful weeks in a wonderful Villa directly on Flamands beach. Too
wonderful as it turns out! My wife became pregnant with our third child
( Due July 30, 2004 ) and my children did not want to leave. To make a
long story short ... we sold our home in Connecticut ... we sold all of
our belongings .... and bought a small villa in Corossol ( the five of
us in two rooms should be fun ... but hey - we are a close family! ). We
are moving to St Barth at the end of August. What an adventure! We all
can not wait to call St. Barth home.

Great web site, great island
We have been frequent visitors to St Barts for 10 years, and have never been disappointed. It is such a friendly island. From one trip to the next, things change, specially restaurants and shops, even the ones which have been here for years. Staff changes constantly on this little island, making it difficult to predict what we will find during our next trip. At least it keep things interesting, and we enjoy rediscovering the place each trip.

- - J.Roy -- (March 2004)

Last year, my husband and I visited St. Barths for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it. We are going again later this fall. When I try to describe our experience to others, I find myself speechless; it was the most wonderful place we had ever visited. We went during the off season, therefore, we had the beaches practically to ourselves. The weather was wonderful, the water was exactly how it looked in the pictures. I oftentimes find myself daydreaming about it. We feel that we struck gold in finding St. Barths and plan on visiting it for as long as we can!

I wanted to write and let you know what a splendid Island you have. Yes, It is a bit expensive, but what a Glorious and Relaxing Week we had. We stayed in a Bungalow at the Emeraude Plage, and The Inlaws and friends had the Double Occupancy Place. We were able to stay right on St. Jean Beach 4 Nights and cook our own Dinners to Enjoy in the Caribbean breeze. We did Venture out to Dinner on Three Occasions, Once right down the street (first night), Then in the middle of our stay we went to Marigot Bay for Dinner. Our Last Night on the Island was a special treat at Francois Plantation for one of the most Fabulous Dining Experiences any of us could remember.
The Beaches are Beautiful, the people very Friendly, and the Food was out of this world. We are already planning a Mid March Visit in 2005, and will try to get back to Emeraude Plage.
Much thanks for a Wonderful Vacation

Torneremo ancora. Grazie St.Barth...........

Ô St.Barth!!
This past April brought my families 19th trip to St.Barth. Each year we come back for a different taste of the island. This mysterious paradise gives off this magic that just makes you fall in love with it. The beautiful beaches, the amazing cuisine the wonderful people. It fits the description of perfect. It is like no other place i have ever visited, St.Barth is its own unique place, that i am in love with. I almost didnt go home with my family this year. I have watched St. Barth change over the years, it is quite different from 19 years ago. But no matter how much it changes the people are still high spirited and the island is still a perfect paradise. I am just counting down the days till my plane leaves next April!
Au revoir, ma petite île

- - L. Scott -- (May 2003)

Well, this past December brought our 12th trip to Saint Barts in the last 13 years. Only a hurricane a few years ago could interrupt our annual trip there. Looking to add a bit more interest to our trip, we asked Bethany Ludwick of Wimco Villas to choose a home for us in a different part of the island. Traditionally we had stayed in Pt. Milou or Lurin. But this year we were situated in the most incredible villa in Colombier. We were greeted with perfect views of Flamand beach and the surrounding hillsides. Even the unexpected road construction between the airport and Colombier could not dampen the enthusiasm my wife and I had for this lovely residential neighborhood. In keeping with our desire to fill our trip with new discoveries, we frequented many new restaurants and shops - new for us anyway - while not forgetting to stop by our favorite spots like La Marine and Paradisio in Gustavia. The Tom Beach Club was simply wonderful, as we ate quiet meals under the stars along St Jean Beach. While every trip to St. Barts is truly special, it's amazing how an island that is so small geographically, can be so large in terms of the culture, cuisine, sites, diversity and friendship that it offers. We look forward to our next trip to St. Barts - 9 months away - and to all the new discoveries an old friends can provide.

- - B. Gagauf -- (February 2003)

My fiance and I have visited St. Barths only once. We are going back in April for our honeymoon. St. Barths is in a class by itself as compared to other
Caribbean islands. The beaches and the sea are incomparable. The cuisine is
pure heaven and the people are wonderful. We were dumbstruck when we were
informed that crime is all but nonexistent on this beautiful little island.
Our stay at Le Toiny could only be described as out of this world. The
privacy and attention to detail was superb. But it is the island we fell in love
with. It was almost an indescribable feeling when we were floating in the sea at
Grand Saline. The calm, blue, clear sea of St. Jean beach is only enhanced
by the constant activity around. The planes, the bars and restaurants and all
of the happy people. I have decided, however, that St. Barths magic cannot be
defined by the normal standards we apply to vacation spots. Surely it
excels at those things as well, but it's appeal is more difficult to pinpoint. It's
a feeling, a subtle way that you bond with the environment. It is a feeling of
well being that is undefinable and unique. Usually after vacationing for a
week or so, I am somewhat looking forward to going home and seeing family,
friends etc. Not in St. Barths; I actually cried at the airport looking out
the windows towards St. Jean beach. We will be back in April, staying at the
Eden Rock; we cannot wait.

- - MM Davis -- (December 2002)

I just want to let you be aware of our story; we were advised by a friend of ours that we should try and visit an island called St.Barts in November of 2000. When we checked out the so called travel experts writings we thought that we were out of our league so we only stayed for three nights. As we were leaving the exquisite Christopher hotel to go to the second leg of our journey on French St.Maarten we were advised that that island is very different than St.Barts. How right they were! St.Barts is a true paradise and this December will be our third time into paradise! We are not rich by no stretch of the imagination I am a civil servant; but it is worth every dollar saved to return each and hopefully every year to paradise! The staff at the Christopher hotel treats us like royalty as well as a part of the family. All restaurants are a great dining experience. After travelling throughout the Caribbean the only place to go is to St.Barts!

- - S. Graziose -- (October 2002)

Our Experiences over the Past Twenty Years in St Barts
We discovered this "jewel" of an island in 1981 when we spent one day in Gustavia and on the St Jean Beach on our Windjammer Honeymoon trip. We visited 9 islands in the Caribbean that trip and knew immediately that we would return to St Barts. We returned in 1985 with friends of ours & returned yearly and sometimes twice a year since then. Last November we spent 10 days for our 20th anniversary at Filao Beach Hotel with our buddy, Mario. We drank numerous bottles of Cristal with him & had a wonderful time. He always has all of the scoop on the island. Over the years we have made many, many fabulous friends and eaten at many terrific restaurants. Yearly, we stay at a wonderful villa, Les Ilets de La Plage, right on the beach where Francoise & Patricia treat us like family. We rent our Smart Car from David & Vincente, like a brother & sister to us. In fact, we are meeting them in Paris in September. Last year, we went to La Saladerie for David's birthday with about 20 of his friends, including Marco & Katy, who own two boutiques in Gustavia, and Christoffe from Carl Gustaf, and had a wonderful dinner. Everyone spoke French except for us, but we were accepted as one of them, very typical in St Barts. We wouldn't know what to do if Lucien & Michel weren't at "Le Select". They have both been our terrific friends for years, and a couple of years ago when I had back problems, Lucien helped us tremendously. It is always one of our first stops and Marius is always there to greet us at "Cheesburger in Paradise". Ala makes the best fancy drinks from scratch at Le Repaire, and Eric always makes us feel at home. Two of our favorite restaurants in Gustavia are Eddy's and L'Entracte. We eat the most wonderful seafood at Eddy & Brigitte's family table, and Jean Louis at L'Entracte is like family to us and serves great food & drinks. In fact, his birthday is the same day as mine. Then there is Jean Louis at La Cantina who is always most welcoming. One of our favorite restaurants and bars is Le Bete à Zailes on Gustavia harbor, which is owned by our good friends Jean Marc & Fanny. We also love to visit Marian & Jason from Manapany at his new place across from La Marine, one of our favorites for mussels. We love Paradisio for homemade pasta, Vietnam for their wonderful soups, and Boubou's & La Mandala for tapas & Asian food. The views & food at the Eden Rock are incredible, and we've had terrific lunches at Tom Beach. Last year we had 15 people at one & the food & service was superb. Then, for lobster, there is no better place than New Born with Frankie & David. We've chosen 4 & 5 pounders there. Just Fabulous!!! Every year we count the days until we can return to our favorite place in the world. Today it's 96 days and counting!

- - Tim & Marilyn Griffin -- (August 2002)

Hopefully, next March will be our 8th visit to St.Barts. Whenever I am
fortunate enough to visit, the minute I step off that frightening plane, I
feel like I have come home. Starting in 1987, my husband and I travelled to
St.Barts and stayed in a villa with my sister and her husband. In 1999, my
husband and I took our 10 year old grandson and stayed at Emeraude Plage.
Zachary absolutely loved everything about it! Next winter we would like to
visit again, this time, with Zachary's parents (our oldest daughter and her
husband.) I love the laid-back feeling, the beaches, the restaurants, the
people, the feeling of safety. Friends who have not been blessed with the
opportunity to visit St.Barts cannot understand why we don't try someplace
different. They don't "get" that there is no gambling, no resorts, no
chocolates on the pillows, etc., etc. And that is just fine with us!

My souvenir from St. Barth's
My Aunt asked me at the last minute to join her for 2 weeks in St. Barth's
in February of 2001. I gladly accepted and packed my bags immediately.
Little did I know that it would change my life forever. We had a wonderful
time experiencing all of the unique qualities of the island. Furthermore, I
fell in love with a young man who was and still is living in St. Barth's.
We
had a very brief but very passionate island romance. It was just like you
see
in the movies. When I arrived back in the states, I was surprised with the
news that I was pregnant. Baby "Bart" as he is so lovingly called came into
this world on November 20, 2001 and he will always be my little souvenir.
We
don't hear from his father even though he is aware of this sweet baby. When
he is older, I cannot wait to bring him to this island where it all began
and
I hope that he will understand how magical of place St. Barth's is. There
is
no place on earth quite like it. St. Barth's will always hold a special
place
in my heart."

- - Mary and William (aka: Baby Bart) Hulsey -- (May 2002)

A Special Trip
My wife and I made our first trip to St. Barths in 1994, when we were
poor graduate students at Yale. Just two weeks before that trip, a new
acquaintance of ours had casually asked at a party whether we'd like to
accompany him and his fiancee' to a small island in the FWI. The
fiancee' worked for a company whose egalitarian owner allowed his most
junior staff person to have dibs on any week at his 5 bungalow luxury
villa. We'd never heard of St. Barths, but by the next morning we had
managed to find a roundabout way to get there with 4 connections (most of
the flights were booked). For one wonderful week, we soaked up the
ambience and the glorious views. Since the car and the villa were
gratis, we considered writing a book titled "St. Barths on $50 a day."
Four years ago, when our son was six months old, we decided to return.
Our son has now been to St. Barths each Spring of his life, as has our 19
month old son. They believe that everyone goes to St. Barths in
February. I read many articles over the past eight years about the
decline of St. Barths and the "good old days" that seemed to end in the
late 90's. I'd have to disagree. I realize that I never experienced the
truly pastoral St. Barths. But as far as I know, there is no other place
on earth like it. When we land at the airport each time, there is a
relaxation that comes upon me like no other experience has ever matched.
When we leave each year, there is no debate about next year's
destination.
When we departed St. Barths a few weeks ago, I expected to see it again
in a year. But shortly after returning, we had word that my father's
prostate cancer metastasized to his bones. My wife and I immediately had
the same thought. We had to take my parents to this beautiful place.
So, in three weeks we'll be back with our two sons and my parents. We've
had to rent a one-level place so that my father can negotiate his way
around. I don't know that a trip to St. Barths with his grandsons will
heal my father of his cancer, but I do believe that it will be a healing
place for his spirit.
Last week, as we talked about the trip, I said, "Dad, wait until you look
out over the sea and the mountains at sunset. It's like heaven."
"Well," he replied, "I guess I need to get familiar with that view."

- - James D Moorehead -- (April 2002)

Never in my life have I anticipated a trip with such desire, or is it
need? This visit to St Barts in March will be extra special. My wife
and I have been to St. Barts several times and in other years made the
foolish mistake of trying other places - always thinking that wherever
we are, although sometimes nice, it just isn't St. Barts. As for most
of you who have found this note, you know what I mean. When people ask
why St. Barts is so special, I always say, "It just depends on what you
like to do".
But back to the special nature of this year's trip. Post 9.11 we have
all seen another world and the thought of sand, sun and freedom-of-soul
that St. B provides has intense meaning this year. On 9.11, I was
attending a meeting on the 66 floor of the south tower of the World
Trade Center and saw the first place flying down the neck of Manhattan.
We all know what happened from there for the world. I was one of the
fortunate ones to walk down 66 flights of stairs and then the length of
Manhattan to safety.
Did I mention, sand, sun... and, well given our rather stressful fall,
we also decided this year that St.Barts would be a family trip. It will
be the inaugural trip for our two girls (seven and five). They have
been well trained in the joy of extended lunches and they well know that
Dad loves his food and wine! And the villa has a great pool!
To say this one will be a trip to remember is more of an understatement
than words can express.

- - Dodd -- (February 2002)

The pilgrimage
This is the hardest time of all, the endlessly long and gloomy weeks
of January that it seems will never pass. The shadows are long all day
here, the midday sun cuts slanted paths through the bare tree branches. It
is all bearable only because with the eventual departure of January comes
February and the annual pilgrimage to St. Barths.
Our first trip was in
1987, when, urged by a lifelong friend, I came with the girlfriend who would
later become my wife. We made plans at the last minute and took a humble
room at La Presqu'ile, commuting to our friends' place at P'tit Morne. It
took about 24 hours for the little island to establish an indelible mark on
our lives, and we haven't missed a year since. In 1989, while staying in
St. Barths, we flew to Anguilla and got married - they required a 6 week
stay in St. Barths, but in Anguilla it could be done on a day trip. In
1991, we brought our first child, five weeks old - now we have three who all
know that February means St. Barth's, and one whose middle name is Marigot .
We've seen the incredible changes; some we view with sadness, like the
air-conditioned airport that replaced its simple predecessors, but others
with joy, like the availability of wonderful ingredients with which to
indulge in our fond pastime of cooking. But never have the changes dampened
the intensity of the anticipation, always fulfilled, of the next voyage to
St. Barth's. And so now I must count, painstakingly slowly, the days that
remain, the longest 30 days of the year.

- - Sadovnikoff, Nicholas,M.D. -- (January 02)

As my wife and I depart for our 5th annual winter trip in a row to SBH, we look forward to with excitement. We have rented the same villa each year (and no, I'm not saying which one in order to preserve it's availability for me!) and come for at least 10 days. My wife flys ahead of me by a couple of days to 1) work on the base tan and 2) stock the wine cabinets accordingly. So by the time I arrive, the villa is in exactly the shape we desire and her tan is as well. Our faves include Maya's and dinner on top of Eden Rock. And by the time we depart, our winter time need for Vitamin D is taken in and our souls/intimacy is restored, just in time to return to the day to day hussle/bussle of a job for me and kids for her. Look for us at either Columbier or Saline Beach, as we will be absorbing as much as we can.

- - Mayson Brooks -- (January 02)

My husband and I have been coming to St. Barths since 1984, but we don't get there as often as we'd like. (We have a small business and three children.) Our last trip was luckily just in time to celebrate Le Select's anniversary, and enjoy Jimmy Buffett's concert.
The magic of St. Barths stays with us, especially the quiet hammock of our favorite villa high on the hills above Flammand Beach, and the fresh lobster at Marigot Bay. St. Barths is where my husband and I brand new lovers all over again, and I really DO look as gorgeous and young as I feel.
We gotta find a way to get back soon!

- - Abby Roberts -- (December 01)

We are currently in St Barths, arrived on November
28 but depart for London on December 14.
We rented a villa overlooking Lorient; it is located up the hill after
the 'fishmonger', on the left - great views ! Although we had our last 3
nights booked for Le Toiny, we decided to stay at the villa, it is
breathtaking.
Tonight we shall eat again at Francois Plantation - it must be the best
french restaurant on the island; Gaiac was good; Mandela and Boubous also
were good; Mexican by the harbour - also tasty; Tamarin for lunch with new
crew from Lafayette was delicious ..
we bid farewell to this magical island for another year;

- - Jeremy -- (December 01)

In 1999, we visited St. Barths for one day, making the day trip from St.Maarten aboard the catamaran "Swaliga". As we toured the island in one of the local taxis, we said to ourselves, "This is the island we should have come to for our vacation."
The following year, in December, we did come to St. Barths for our vacation and we were not disappointed. From the beautiful, uncrowded beaches, to the
incomparable dining, to the Vanilla Rum which we sampled for the first time, we found that this was indeed the island of choice for our future holiday plans.
So it goes without saying that we are returning to St. Barths this year, again in December, and we have no doubt that we will enjoy ourselves every bit as much as we did last year. Prepare a table for us at Paradisio and
make sure to save us some space at the beach bar at Le Tom Beach. The festivities begin on December 5th.
A Bientôt !!!

- - John Davidson (November 01)

I first had the pleasure of a visit in 1975, just for the day. In 1977 we
stayed for week at the PLM Jean Bart, we paid $29 us per day including
breakfast. I/we visited my favorite place in the world over 40 times since
then. We have stayed at many places over those years including renting houses
from Brooke and Roger at Sibarth, staying at the Carl Gustaf,
Guanahani, Francois Plantation, Christopher and mostly at Manapany(15-20
times). We have not stayed at Manapany since Patrick Denis Finet left the
Hotel. We have stayed at the Christopher the last few times. We probably
would go back to Manapany if the management relaxed a bit. Like many other
frequent visitors we have some favorite residents Jean Paul from Taiwana was
my "IDOL" when I first saw him in th late 70's early 80's while lunching at
Taiwana. I looked forward to our brief hello's in the mornings at Bar de
l'Oubli. My wife of course thinks I'm nuts. I must mention our pal Mario at
Filao, my friend Marian at Manapany, my friend Adam at Le Sapotillier, my
friend Gerard Balageas formerly of Au Port who is now married to his American
bride living in Maryland (US) with their kids. Other favorites-- I miss Autour
du Rocher and the old Airport and quieter times but we all understand the
need for the residents to expand the tourism business. Some "OTHER" comments
I convinced two friends to go to ST BARTHS on their honeymoons one had been
several years ago with a bunch of us-They stayed (2000) at Filao which they
loved, but they said the island was filthy and overcrowded, this was April. We
went the last Decembers and I disagree. Another younger couple went for their
first and left after 2 nights because they were afraid to drive at night. I
should close mentioning our favorite restaurants - Colonial-Filao and
Lafayette for lunch--Sapotillier--L' Escale--Francois
Plantation--Maya's--Tamarin--Tom beach and I know I forgot some. I will
always be a loyal and hopefully frequent visitor for a long time to come
Merci

- - DENNIS DUFFY -- (November 01)

We are looking forward to our visit next month. Each year for the past eleven years the highlight of our year has been our visits to St Barts. We trust that the magic is still there.
We will miss the wonderful beach dog. She added a nice touch.
Looking forward to being there soon.

- - Tom and Mary Margaret Rand

We enjoy your web site on a daily basis. The Cam that you have set up
in Lorient is perfect. We can then see how the weather is for the day
and it makes us feel that much closer to St. Barth, dreaming of sitting
on one of the beaches, yeah!

- - Michael and Barbara Walsh

We visited St Barths this summer and so enjoyed our stay. We are Californians
and the treck to the island from San Juan to St Marteen to St Barts seemed
like an excessive haul. It is so easy for us to get to the tropics of
hawaii, and as we talk more and more about our visit to your wonderful little
almost secret community we realize how deeply touched and how much we enjoyed
our visit. We are one of the few to have had dinner at the Karl G with no one
else but ourselves, what service and we feel in love with the local
hospitality of eddy's. We will come again even with the time and flight
changes we must endure

- - John Erkman

Don't know quite where to begin. Difficult to select the proper adjectives.
To
write "having a great time on a beautiful island" on a US-bound postcard is
one
thing. To express your true feelings on actually experiencing St Barths is
altogether a different kettle of conch stew. It is relaxing - no thoughts of
work,
cellphones, kids, pets, grandkids, garden, golf or a compulsion to watch CNN
or
the Weather Chanel. It is communicating - with nature on the beautiful,
secluded
beaches of Saline and Governeur(don't really care that we didn't lose that
last
ten pounds), - with the many delightful young people working in the hotels and
restaurants and the locals we met(really sorry the our high school French was
woeful, but appreciated). It is satisfying - we're talking seriously good
food here -
whether dining at BouBou's or Mandala, or rubbing elbows with the locals at
Le Creole or Le Select, the dining was exquisite. Exciting - forget the brief
nose-dive into the airport, the real excitement begins when you climb behind
the
wheel of your Mini-Moke or Smart and take to the "highways" of the island.
Most
of the roads are no wider than your driveway and do require extreme caution.
We
were saddened by the news of a pedestrian fatality near our hotel during our
stay. Expensive - can be, especially if your significant other has tastes for
the latest
European fashions, my Visa Gold Card took a major hit. Unforgettable - we
began
planning our next visit before our plane lifted off over the beach at St Jean.
Word of caution - if you are among the fortunate (not) people who have been
everywhere and done everything there is to do, St Barths may not be for you -
but then again,
what is? The reat of us will treasure our time spent there.
