Latanier or Sabal Palm
 (Arecacéesabal Questeliana)

This tree was introduced by Father Morvan towards the end of the 19th century. Its fronds, imported up to thattime, are used for weaving hats. The cottage industry that developed in St. Barth as a result was economically significant to the island, and the tree was widely propagated. Numerous latanier, or sabal palm , groves can still be found today (Lorient, Public and Saline). Its fronds have the particularity of bleaching white in the sun. |
