Flamboyant

(Delonix Regia)

Originally from Madagascar, the striking Flamboyant tree is found throughout the Caribbean. It was allegedly named "Poinciana" by the English in honor of the French governor, Monsieur de Poincy, dating this tree's presence here to the 17th century. Its branches fan out horizontally into small, feathery leaves. Its abundantred-orange flowers are found in clusters at the branch terminals. Its flowering season lasts from May to September. Black pods filled with seeds dangle from the tree long after its flowers and leaves have fallen. For several months of the year, the flamboyant tree is completely bare. The flamboyant trees were particularly affected by Hurricane Luis, notably those found in Lorient.
