cotonier Cotton

(Gossypium Hirsutum)

This somewhat knotty shrub tree, originally from Central and South America was naturalized in dry climactic zones. It was commercially exploited on the island in times past. Today, birds use its soft cotton to pad their nests. Its solitary flowers bloom from November to May and can be white to beige in color. When its tough green seed opens, it ripens into black seeds covered with cotton.
