Englishman's Head

(Melocactus Intortus)

This cactus, a common island sight, primarily grows on rocky cliffs and hills and can have up to 20 sides. This cephalium is distinguished by its unusual red, thorny "cap" and reaches maturity between 5 and 10 years of age. Its' colorful English name makes it easy to remember and identify. The pink flowers and red fruit of this cactus are somewhat tart and salty and could be compared in taste to bilberries or cranberries.
