Stapelia Gigantea
 (Stapélia Gigantéa)

The Stapelia looks like a cactus but is a member of the milkweed family, Asclepiadaceae. This small plant is olive green and erect. Its starfish-shaped flowers are pale yellow with reddish stripes and are disproportionately large when compared to the cactus stem. The flowers give off a pestilent smell that attracts flies. As they buzz from flower to flower, the flies collect pollen dust and transport them to the next plant, thereby ensuring the successful pollination of this species. Not native to the islands. |
