Night-blooming Cereus

(Cephalocereus Peruvianus)

     Called "Torche" in patois, this cactus often grows in dense thickets. Its stalks are ribbed and doted with small thorns and can attain 6m in height. This cactus is a common part of the island's landscape. Its' large white flowers, which bloom from February to July, have a short lifespan, opening in the late afternoon only to wilt before the next sunrise.
