Aloe

(Aloe Vera)

Although the aloe plant is originally from the Mediterranean region, it is probable that it has been growing on the island for a long time. Like the yucca, it is a member of the liliacees family, and has powerful medicinal properties that are effective against burns. It is also highly valued as a purgative. They are naturally found in arid, rocky soil, but the aloe plant is also cultivated. Its serrated leaves are fleshy and have a high water content. From January to June, its yellow flowers bloom at the tip a stalk 70 to 90 cm. long.
