FIRST THINGS FIRST

First I must apologize profusely to Mr. Thierry Petitjean, the man who makes the wonderful Petite Deauville ice cream. Last month as I was bemoaning the rapid (and continuing) decline of the dollar against the Euro, I pointed out that my friend Frank and I had calculated the price of this ice cream at almost 60 dollars a gallon. What I forgot to say was that price certainly does not stop us from buying it. And that it is truly delicious! Try the vanilla (my personal favorite), it is like manna from heaven. Okay maybe I am getting a little carried away, but I never meant to imply anything negative about the ice cream. It was just a case in point about the prices of things around here, if you have to change the weakened dollar against the mighty Euro. And as Mr. Petitjean has pointed out, this frozen treat is hand-made here on the island with all natural ingredients. One of these days I am going to go and see exactly how it’s made. I’m working my way through a quart of vanilla at the moment. It’s been much needed sustenance during a whirlwind weekend with activities piled one atop the other. It all started on Thursday night with the opening of the Bacardi Cafe, the newest rendition of the restaurant at Villa Creole in Saint Jean (where DJ Romy had the crowd dancing until midnight). Anyone who knows Regis and Veronique will be happy to know that they are back to running the place themselves. There were also two weddings here this weekend. The one on Saturday must be complimented for the choice of flowers. Beautiful wreaths of carnations and orchids were hanging from the hurricane lanterns on the side walls of the Anglican Church, with larger white wreaths on the front doors, and big bouquets of white tulips as well. I saw the flowers on Saturday evening as they made a lovely addition to the Church when I was part of the standing-room-only crowd that attended a rousing concert by the local chorus. The choral director is Charles Darden, an American musician and conductor who lives on the island and just this year became the full-time music director for the Anglican Church, giving up his evening gigs at various hotels. You should hear the soloists, especially tenor Laurent Clequin (who is a pastry chef in real life, but boy does he has a voice!). After the concert there was just enough time to check out the musicians at the Bete A Z’Ailes and swing by the Ti Zouk K’fe to check out their first anniversary party (complete with t-shirts tossed to the crowd). Sunday was the second annual arts festival, with a full roster of cultural events organized by the island’s non-profit associations in front of town hall and the Wall House museum. There are dance and music performances as well as skits in patois, and bands for dancing at night. The season is just getting underway and already I’m out of breath!
