Born in Saint Barth on February 16, 1896, Eugénie Blanchard became the doyenne of humanity on Tuesday, May 4. Since May 25, 2008, she has been the oldest person in France, and at the age of 114, she is also now the oldest person in the world, following the death of Kama Chinen of Japan, who passed away one week shy of her 115th birthday. Eugénie Blanchard, whose nickname is Douchy (for “sweets,” in Papiamento, or Dutch Creole), for the candy she often gave out to children. Through the efforts of Père de Bruyn (the island’s Catholic priest at the time), Douchy became a nun and moved to Curacao at the age of 24 to enter a convent as sister Cyria. In 1953, she returned to live in St Barth with one of her sisters in Anse des Cayes, then in her father’s small house in Merlette until the time she moved into the Hospital de Bruyn in 1980. Our super-centenarian (a person who has lived more than 110 years, an age that only one centenarian out of a thousand achieve, according to European statistics) does not have any specific medical problems. Only 22 super-centenarians in the world ever reached their 115th birthday. In France, Jeanne Calment, who dies on August 4, 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days, was doyenne of humanity for almost eight years.
